The Lighted Grove

I spent several hours painting at Brushy Fork to capture this bright summer light.  Although I walked home after the clouds suddenly changed the light yesterday, I returned this morning to finish it in the perfect sunshine.

We recently traveled to Tennessee for camping and hiking with my kids’ folk dance group Berea Festival Dancers. This is the highest point in the Smoky mountains but the famous views were obscured by thick clouds.  I was enchanted by the tree silhouettes against the heavy white sky and mist.  A lot of these pines are dying due to an insect pest.  Other parts of the Tennessee forest were dominated by dying and standing dead hemlocks that have been decimated by another imported insect.  These places are still beautiful even though haunted by a sad fate.
